Ben Ainslie, London 2012 Gold Medallist, Retires From Olympic Sailing

“It fills me with both relief and sadness to write these words but I can now officially confirm that I have donned my Team GB tracksuit for the last time,” Ainslie told theDaily Telegraph.

“No more Olympic villages. No more opening or closing ceremonies. After almost 20 years entirely dedicated to the pursuit of gold, taking in five Olympic campaigns, I have decided I will not attempt a sixth at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.”

Ainslie will now concentrate on an America’s Cup World Series campaign with JP Morgan BAR.

“I feel increasingly confident that we can one day challenge for the America’s Cup proper. Not at next year’s event in San Francisco – that will be too soon – but perhaps the one after that.”

Carlos Tevez ‘Motoring Madness’ | Premier League

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has been disqualified from driving less than a fortnight after his luxury car was removed from the road by police.

Tevez, 28, mimicked driving a vehicle after he scored twice in his team’s Barclays Premier League win at home to Aston Villa on November 17.

Two days earlier his Porsche Panamera was impounded in Manchester as he could not produce a full UK driving licence.

Today, Lancaster magistrates imposed an interim ban on him for a separate matter in which he failed to provide information when his car was clocked speeding in Morecambe.

It is understood his vehicle was caught breaking the speed limit in the town on March 28 when he played for City’s reserves against Morecambe Reserves.

His solicitor, Gwyn Lewis, told the court his client accepted he did not provide identification – which carries six penalty points – and that under the totting-up procedure he was now liable for disqualification.

Mr Lewis said: “My instructions are though he was not the driver on that occasion I am not going to argue against a ban on grounds of exceptional hardship.”

He asked the magistrates to impose an interim disqualification and adjourn sentencing so that the “no licence case” from Manchester could be dealt with at the same time.

“He (Tevez) has been told that he will not be able to drive this morning,” added the solicitor.

The magistrates agreed and listed the matter in Lancaster for December 20 when the length of the suspension will be set.

The Argentinian did not attend today’s hearing.

His Porsche was seized under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act in a routine patrol near to the Britannia Airport Hotel on November 15. He was then summonsed for driving otherwise in accordance with a driving licence, said Greater Manchester Police.

Three years ago – when he was playing for City’s rivals Manchester United – his Bentley Continental GT Speed was impounded in similar circumstances.

The Bentley was removed by police near to junction 6 of the M60 in February 2009 after it was found he did not have a full UK driving licence.

As an Argentinian driving licence holder, Tevez, from Prestbury, Cheshire, is permitted to drive in Britain for the first 12 months of his stay in the country but is then required to apply for a provisional licence and pass the UK driving theory and practical test.

The centre forward joined West Ham United in 2006 and then moved to Manchester United a season later. He signed for Manchester City in the summer of 2009.

Earlier this Year

Carlos Tévez has had his car impounded for a second time in four years after it was discovered he did not have valid documents for driving in the UK.

The Argentinian was driving his Porsche Panamera in Manchester with an international licence, but had not changed it for a UK equivalent.

Manchester City striker Tévez could only watch as his vehicle was seized in another embarrassing road-related incident.

In February 2009, Tévez had his £140,000 Bentley impounded after it emerged he did not have a full UK driving licence then as well.

Police had stopped him because they suspected his car’s windows were too dark, only to find the former Manchester United striker was without the necessary paperwork. Tests confirmed his car’s tint was illegal.

Later in August that year, he was pulled over on the A34 in south Manchester and asked to produce a valid licence within seven days.

Rafa Benitez The Craziest week in Football | Premier League | Chelsea

Fans protest over the signing of new manager Rafael Benitez, Chelsea v Manchester City, Barclays Premier League.

Rafael Benitez insisted he could not hear Chelsea fans booing after enduring a hostile reception at Stamford Bridge.

“I can guarantee because I was focused on the game I did not listen to the crowd,” Benitez told Sky Sports. “I don’t know if they said something or not. For me the main thing was team and their performance on the pitch.

“I was not listening; I was just concentrating on the game. You could see my body language in the dugout I was just trying to give instructions to my players.”

Asked what Benitez could do to win over the Chelsea fans, City boss Roberto Mancini said: “Win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win every game – only the results can help.”

Benitez responded: “It’s not a secret. It’s true.”

The Spaniard has signed a short-term deal having rejected Blues owner Roman Abramovich’s offer to take caretaker charge of the club in March after André Villas-Boas was dismissed.

Chelsea hailed Benítez as a coach “with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives”.

Lady GAGA Goes Brazilian | Rio de Janeiro

Lady GaGa took time out from rehearsing for her current world tour to play football with local children in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.

Gaga waved to adoring fans from her balcony wearing a Brazil shirt before descending for a kick-about with local kids.

Gaga hadn’t just popped in at random: She was there to get a closer look at the social development project underway in the area, the work of Brazil’s Globo Television and the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Gaga called the experience the “best day [she] ever had,” tweeting, “i’ll never forget Rio, you lit my heart into flames.”

It was me ! I knocked Down Bradley Wiggins

Van driver Cath Burrows has been identified as the lady who hit Olympic cycling hero Bradley Wiggins off his Bike.

Burrows apparently shrieked “Oh my God — I’ve just knocked over Bradley Wiggins!” after the accident.

The businesswoman ironically prefers motorbikes and owns a Porsche garage.

She repeatedly exclaimed “What have I done?” and allegedly told a friend “I just didn’t see him”, when she recalled hitting the Tour de France champion.

Wiggins, 32, was hospitalised after suffering bruised ribs but discharged yesterday afternoon, brandishing his middle finger at photographers as he was driven away.

A spokeswoman for British Cycling said: “It is extremely rare that our riders and coaches are hurt while out cycling on the road, even rarer that two incidents should occur in a short space of time, and we wish Shane and Bradley a speedy recovery.”

Team Sky used its twitter account to update everybody on the situation ;

Bradley Wiggins is making good progress after his crash & has released this statement thanking fans for their support.

Team Sky Statement

Following further examination Team Sky’s medical staff can confirm that as well as bruising he also has a fractured rib, a bruised lung and a dislocated finger.

These injuries are being monitored and he will make a full and speedy recovery.

A Team Sky spokesperson said: “Bradley has already recovered from a mild head injury which required overnight observation in hospital on Wednesday.

“The swelling in his dislocated finger has also reduced and will not require surgery, and he will undergo further X-rays on his fractured rib on Monday.

“He’s convalescing at home with his family and is expected to make a full recovery in a short period of time.”

 Thank you

Bradley Wiggins said today: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and messages over the last 48 hours, and of course all the staff at the Royal Preston Hospital who looked after me so well.

“Although I’m still a little bit sore I will now be spending time at home with my family and concentrating on making a full recovery.

“I would also like to apologise for the gesture that I made when I arrived home yesterday afternoon. I was tired, in a lot of pain, and just wanted to get inside, but I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did. I’m sorry for that.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the bike soon and continuing my preparations for the 2013 season.”

Sutton update

Team Sky’s head coach Shane Sutton was also knocked off his bike on Thursday morning and taken to hospital suffering a fractured cheekbone and bleeding on the brain.

A spokesperson for British Cycling said: “Shane is making steady progress but is likely to remain in hospital for one more day under observation.

“He has fractured his cheekbone which will require surgery in due course. He, like Bradley, is expected to make a complete recovery and will be back in work shortly.”

Ceefax Writes its Last words 1974-2012

Ceefax switched off for good

Another groundbreaking technology bites the dust today as the analogue tv service is switched off in Northern Ireland. It’s the last time anyone will be able to view live Ceefax pages.

After an extended development period, Ceefax went live on the BBC on 23 September 1974, displaying 30 pages of information. Over the years, it grew to provide all manner of information to viewers, ranging from news to horse racing and share prices to flight arrivals – all frustratingly available on multiple pages which seemingly took forever to refresh. But it wasn’t just on the BBC, ITV also offered a similar service called Oracle. And ITV’s offering took a more commercial angle, with a focus on holiday advertising.
The clunky graphics – 24 rows and 40 columns – restricted what could be displayed, but some developments allowed for higher resolutions. Telidon, developed by the Canadian Communications Research Centre, was one example, able to support better graphics.

Jakes got the Hump at the BBC !

Well what a week its been at the BBC ! Jake Humphrey annouced he is too leave the BBC to join BT. Not only the face of the F1 coverage Jake found himself at the front of major sporting events including the football and the 2012 Olympics.

We might draw some conclusions from the comments made by the BBC chief  George Entwistle who pleadged to make a bigger commitment to womens sport and told London24 Magazine ” The BBC has not done enough on the issue of female presenters and will look at showing more women’s sport”.

He also went on to give some idea of some major changes likely to happen due to the increased revenue power of BT &Sky. ” While I am director-general, the BBC will carry on having a serious commitment to sport. But look at the latest BT/Sky Premier League deal, that comes in at about £6.5million per football game. We are simply no longer in that class.”

Well it looks like Claire Balding may escape the shake up and rightly so Claire brings a breath of fresh air to sports presenting along with other new additions appearing on the Beeb. On a lighter note articles about Pornographic websites and Bonking at the Beeb made the news making it very eventful week in all.

According to The Daily Mash  “THE BBC runs a number of porn sites that cannot be viewed in the UK because they contain advertising”. The article also went on to report ” A BBC spokesman said: “We sincerely regret being unable to offer no-holds barred slagtastic action within the UK.

To complete the week an article in the Telegraph covered the dirty little secret which has been exposed by Caroline Thomson a former producer off the BBC. She first joined the BBC as a journalist trainee in 1975, ultimately becoming a producer on Analysis (Radio 4) and later Panorama(BBC1) before becoming personal assistant to SDP leader Roy Jenkins in 1982.

Thomson’s revenge lies in exposing the fact that staff are all at it – with one another. From Andy Marr (recently caught canoodling with one of his producers) backwards, the Beeb is a cauldron of sexual tension. You could make an old-style sex romp about it – Carry On Auntie.
