Wigan Confirm Roger “El Chino” Espinoza Deal | Premier League

The 26-year-old Honduras international has long been linked with a move and is set to swap Major League Soccer for the Barclays Premier League when his contract expires at the end of the year. Espinoza is a versatile player who can play in either defence or midfield and he impressed at this summer’s Olympics with his performance against Brazil.

“We’re working really hard to try to make it happen and we’re looking forward to seeing if we can get that one done successfully,” Martinez said.

“There are a few steps: there is the work permit, there are certain aspects we need to fulfil in the paperwork but Roger is a player that we’ve been following for a long, long time.

“We’ve seen him enjoying his football in the Olympic Games recently with Honduras, and in the World Cup as well he’s been an important part of that group of players with (Wigan defender) Maynor Figueroa. He would be a real asset for us.

“But until January 1 we can’t do anymore than wait and make sure we prepare ourselves for the steps we’ve got ahead to make him a Wigan Athletic player.”

Rafa Benitez The Craziest week in Football | Premier League | Chelsea

Fans protest over the signing of new manager Rafael Benitez, Chelsea v Manchester City, Barclays Premier League.

Rafael Benitez insisted he could not hear Chelsea fans booing after enduring a hostile reception at Stamford Bridge.

“I can guarantee because I was focused on the game I did not listen to the crowd,” Benitez told Sky Sports. “I don’t know if they said something or not. For me the main thing was team and their performance on the pitch.

“I was not listening; I was just concentrating on the game. You could see my body language in the dugout I was just trying to give instructions to my players.”

Asked what Benitez could do to win over the Chelsea fans, City boss Roberto Mancini said: “Win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win every game – only the results can help.”

Benitez responded: “It’s not a secret. It’s true.”

The Spaniard has signed a short-term deal having rejected Blues owner Roman Abramovich’s offer to take caretaker charge of the club in March after André Villas-Boas was dismissed.

Chelsea hailed Benítez as a coach “with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives”.
