Stoke’s Tony Pulis Grabs F&C INVESTMENTS PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARD

LMA

The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the F&C Investments Performance of the Week Award should go to Stoke City following their excellent 1-0 away win against West Bromwich Albion in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday 1st December 2012.

Manager Tony Pulis will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to commemorate the award.

On 75 minutes Dean Whitehead steered the winner in from fellow substitute Michael Kightly’s cross after great perseverance by Kenwyne Jones. Jones did brilliantly to pressurise Jonas Olsson on the right flank and Whitehead was able to profit to give Stoke a first win on the road in the top flight since they beat Blackburn Rovers last January. Their fourth victory from five games sees them move up to ninth in the Premier League table.

Manager Tony Pulis was naturally delighted;

“It was a great result because we haven’t won away from home this season. We have drawn four away but could easily have won a couple of those. Every one of the players who played gave it everything.

“We were quite happy to let them have the ball and try to counter-attack. We wanted to make sure they didn’t get behind us.

“We didn’t want to lose the ball in bad areas. They play between the lines very well. We are delighted to get a clean sheet and win the game.

“We have done well defensively, but we have done well all season. It has been a very good week but we don’t get too carried away when we are winning or too despondent when we are losing.”

Queens Park Rangers Joey Barton’s Rant With the Daily Mail

Queens Park Rangers footballer Joey Barton, who is currently on loan to a French side, says he may sue the Daily Mail newspaper after it published an article that suggested he should become football’s “gay hero”.

The piece was written by the paper’s sport columnist Martin Samuel.

Barton, 30, who is heterosexual and married with a child, has blasted the paper for “shoddy journalism” and on Wednesday afternoon tweeted from his personal account @joey7barton

“I see Jim Royles giving it beans about my sexuality in the Daily Mail. Like thats anything to do with him. Can he say what he’s said?

“Sounds slightly bigoted and Martin Samuel.to me. Any legal-eagles out there know if he can get away with this?

“My sexuality is of no concern to anyone except me and my family. Can’t see the missus being happy about this piece.

“Nor, would I like my child (when old enough) to read this tripe. Shoddy journalism.

“I will probably have to sue. I don’t really need the money or the hassle. So I offer this as a olive branch.

“Actually, no. Theres no olive branch. Enough’s enough”.

“In light of the Leveson enquiry, it seems a strange thing to print. I mean I have never even met the guy. He doesn’t know me. Shocking.”

Chelsea continue Brazilian revolution | Premier League | Transfers

LONDON (Reuters) – Chelsea have agreed terms with Brazil’s Fluminense for the transfer of 18-year-old defender Wallace, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

Wallace, a Brazil under-20 international, was part of the under-17 team that won the South American championship last year and were fourth at the World Cup at the same level.

He made his senior debut at 17 and helped Fluminense win the Brazilian league championship, the Rio State League and the Guanabara Cup.

He will officially join Chelsea in the January transfer window but will remain with Fluminense until the end of the season.

Brazil – Denmark, FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011: Though their opener had some luck about it, Brazil’s second and third, scored by Ademilson and Wallace, were delightful.

Fourteen Eritrean football club Players disappear in Uganda

(Reuters) – At least 14 members of the Eritrea football squad have disappeared in Uganda while playing in a regional tournament and may eventually claim asylum, Ugandan officials said on Monday.

Eritrea is one of the world’s most secretive states ruled by a reclusive president. This year United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay accused the Asmara government of meting out summary executions, torture and detaining thousands of political prisoners.

In July last year 13 members of an Eritrean football club sought asylum in Tanzania while 12 members of the national squad disappeared in Kenya in 2009 after competing in a regional tournament.

Rodgers Mulindwa, a spokesman for the Federation of Ugandan Football Associations (FUFA), told Reuters the players had not been seen since early Sunday.

“It’s true, some of the Eritrean players have disappeared. They’ve not been seen at their hotel since early yesterday and it’s very unfortunate,” Mulindwa said.

Police spokesman Ibn Sekundi put the number of missing squad members at 18 but said the team’s management had informed them the players were simply “checking on relatives”.

Eritrea were taking part in the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) competition. Eritrea last played on Friday, losing 2-0 to Rwanda.

Moses Watasa, from Uganda’s Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) which is responsible for processing asylum applications, said the Eritrean players had not made contact.

“As of now we haven’t had any contact with them so we don’t know their whereabouts, but it’s possible they might want to seek asylum later,” he said.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has suffered a heart attack and is recovering in hospital.

The 76-year-old’s heart attack followed a bout of pneumonia, the club said.

A statement from the club read: “Peter was taken ill at home on Friday and is currently being treated in hospital. He is making a good recovery.

“The club wishes Peter a full and speedy return to health and our thoughts are with him and his family at this time.”

Hill-Wood has been chairman of the club since 1982, and is a former vice-chairman of the Hambros Bank.

He is the third member of his family to serve as Arsenal chairman, following on from his father Denis (1962-1982) and his grandfather Samuel, who had two separate spells in the role between 1929 and 1936 and from 1946 to 1949.

Former Southend, Stevenage and Oxford player Mitchell Cole has died, aged 27, the Football League has confirmed.

The former West Ham trainee retired as a professional player in February on medical advice after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition which causes an irregular thickness of the heart in certain areas.

He gave an interview to The Sun at the time in which he said: “A few players around the world die of this every year. The specialists told me that every day I have a one percent chance of dropping dead and sport quadruples that risk.

“When the doctor gave me the numbers and showed me images of my heart, it hit me hard.”

Cole did return to football to make a handful of non-league appearances, some of which came for Arlesey Town.

However, according to their director of football, Gary King, watching Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffer a cardiac arrest in an FA Cup tie with Tottenham in March convinced Cole to give up the game for good.
